Outfit Inspiration: Kerry Washington’s Statement Skirt
Stars: they’re just like us. They have babies and then bounce right back onto the red carpet in sky high Louboutins. If you thought Kerry Washington was the picture of poise and elegance before, her post-baby appearance at the Women in Film Crystal and Lucy Awards proves that she’s got some major secrets up her cap sleeves. She hit the red carpet like a true veteran (and after last year’s red carpet appearances, she certainly knows how to work a step-and-repeat), glowing with post-baby bliss and wearing a great statement skirt from MaxMara’s sister label, SportMax.
We love how she let the statement skirt take center stage and kept the rest of her outfit relatively subdued. Her deep, plunging top is definitely highlighting a few post-pregnancy perks, and she finished her look with orange spiked pumps that pulled from the orange in her skirt. Add a slick of matching lipstick and Washington found her style stride again without missing a step.
To get a similar look, we’ve found a great skirt that you can wear just about anywhere and the perfect pieces to add just a touch of Kerry Washington’s style to your wardrobe.
Washington’s SportMax skirt is a work of art (really — it’s got a Pollock vibe, doesn’t it?), but it’s decidedly an after-dark affair. If you want to get a statement skirt that you can wear day or night, try the Nanette Lepore Forever Falling Fantasy Floral Print Skirt ($223.50), which has the same swirling pattern and artsy vibe that Washington’s skirt does, but is perfectly appropriate for daytime events — think summer weddings or bridal showers — and cocktail hour alike.
Available at Bloomingdale’s.
1. We’re positive that Kerry Washington took this event as an opportunity to show off her great post-baby body, so she’s flashing a lot of skin. If you want to pair your skirt with something more demure, we love the Rebecca Taylor Lace Inset Top ($295), which is anything but basic.
2. Box clutches and minaudi¨res are great for the red carpet, something like the Rebecca Minkoff Coco Leather Clutch ($225) will work with your less scrutinized social calendar and fit all of your necessities.
3. Orange lipstick makes a return to the forefront of beauty every summer, but it seems like 2014 might just be the year that it makes it onto the mainstream. Try our favorite, NARS Heat Wave Semi-Matte Lipstick ($26).
4. Forget those adages about matching your shoes to your bag, because we love how Washington matched her lipstick to her Louboutins. For a great pair of orange shoes, try the statement-making Sophia Webster Ida Sandal ($465).
